Just like in math, A+B = C (transformational coaching + group training = Shoshin Ryu). If you want the whole enchilada, join me for martial arts classes. There are few things more transformational than a dedicated martial arts practice. It is individual internal work, group training, and ongoing support all rolled into one.

Personal transformation?

Yep.

Self-defense?

Yep.

Safety training?

Yep.

Empowerment training?

Yep.

Brain training?

Yep.

Tapping?

Yep, even that!*

*This optional component is only included in the Waterloo, New York dojo — other Shoshin dojos do not include this component.

What it is

Shoshin Ryu is… Learning how not to hurt others, how not to be hurt by others, and how to be responsible for one’s own harmony and happiness.

We are a Traditional Japanese Martial system that employs essentially five “fingers” to create a hand that encompasses an overall understanding and depth in personal self-defense and personal growth.

The five fingers of Shoshin Ryu include the following:

ATEMI

Striking

NAGE

Throwing

NEWAZA

Ground fighting/grappling

BUKI KEIKO

Weapons training (at higher levels)

KATA

Learning to move oneself and how to see multiple “options” of self-defense from any attack.

Shoshin Ryu is very flexible and is fun to learn. It has implicit teachings — as all martial arts do — and explicit teachings and assigned readings to expand a student’s understanding of how they fit into the world and the potential positive impact they can have on every person they meet.

Shoshin Ryu is a cooperative school rather than a competitive one. We do not compete in or host tournaments. It is a traditionally based system, which stresses self-defense and personal growth and transformation.

Like many physical activities, Shoshin Ryu offers overall physical fitness (increased strength, flexibility, coordination, etc.). It also goes beyond the physical components and increases your mental “firmness and flexibility.”

The art helps build self-confidence, calmness, and compassion that come with a higher efficiency and effective self-defense system. In addition, it provides the tools and methods of reducing stress.

I started training Shoshin Ryu twenty years ago and I have used the skills I learned in class to be a better student (in my MBA program), a better parent, a better employee, and a better partner.

I’ve used the teachings to provide healthy perspective on challenges in my life and I’ve used physical skills such as breathing techniques to calm down in stressful situations. Shoshin taught me to always ask what MY role in a situation is and how I can choose to move from kindness and peace toward whatever solution is possible. These are some of the things you will learn if you train Shoshin Ryu regularly.

Shoshin Ryu is a Japanese based system of martial arts. It is both bujutsu (a school emphasizing effective martial arts techniques ) and budo (a school emphasizing personal character development). Shoshin Ryu is a cooperative school rather than a competitive one. It is a traditionally based system which stresses self-defense and personal growth.

How it helps

Shoshin Ryu is similar to other arts in that it builds focus, aids concentration, offers stress relief, makes connection among practitioners, and improves physical fitness.

Like many physical activities, Shoshin Ryu offers overall physical fitness (increased strength, flexibility, coordination, etc). It also provides stress release and increased mental “firmness and flexibility”.

It then goes farther by adding the self-confidence, calmness, and compassion that comes with a higher efficiency and effective self-defense system. Tolerance and loyalty stemming from its Japanese heritage are also developed. All this is done safely with limited risk of injury. Most everyone is capable of making black belt if they train.

Shoshin Ryu gives each individual the opportunity to progress at their own pace. Through the opportunity to work with various students, one gains a variety of experiences. During the learning process, all students must attempt to keep an open mind. You can still begin training even if you are too old, too young, too overweight, too weak. Through your own personal efforts and training Shoshin Ryu, your overall health will improve. Each journey must start with a first step.

“I worked with Jen for many different things including EFT, Shoshin, and Intuitive Self Defense. Jen is a great person and makes you feel very welcomed and comfortable. She goes above and beyond to make sure her clients recieve the best possible experience and leave feeling better than before. I have learned a lot from Jen and her classes, I would recommend her services to anyone!”
